The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system consisting of 2, 900 individual reefs and 900 islands for over 23, 000km. The Great Barrier Reef was listed in the UNESCO world heritage list in 1981. This coral reef stretches for more than 2,000 kilometres along the Queensland Coastline. This natural wonder of the world can be seen from space therefore making it the largest single structure made by living organisms. This reef was constructed by billion of tiny organisms called coral polyps.
LocationThe Great Barrier Reef is a coral sea located on Australia's north- eastern coast in the Coral Sea. It stretches more that 23, 000 km along the coast of Queensland beginning at the tip of Cape York Peninsula extending down to the Bundaberg in the south.
